CONSULTANT EPIDEMIOLOGIST/MEDICAL STATISTICIAN
£34,970 - £50,647
The Defence Analytical Services Agency (DASA) produces a range of
statistical, analytical, planning and consultancy services for the
Ministry of Defence and the UK Armed Forces. We are looking for an
Epidemiologist or Medical Statistician to join our highly active Health
Statistics branch, based in Bath. The post is for a full-time position,
but we are prepared to consider part-time working if necessary.
We currently produce the MoD’s statistics on a wide range of
health-related outcomes: we cover deaths, medical discharges and
downgradings, injuries and related disorders, post-deployment health,
and health and safety incidents. Our work on suicides and on Gulf
veterans’ mortality attracts a lot of attention, from ministers and the
public. We support a major external epidemiological research programme
on the physiological and psychological health of personnel deployed to
Iraq. We are also developing important work in a number of new areas,
including primary and secondary care. We have strong links with the
Defence Medical Services, Defence scientific staff, external academic
epidemiologists, and counterparts overseas. We place many of our
findings into the public domain and are keen to develop joint
publications in peer-reviewed journals.
DASA Health Statistics is a mixed-skilled team of 28, including a health
statistician, a public health consultant military medical advisor,
statistics graduates, generalists and trained medical coders, as well as
the Consultant Epidemiologist. We are friendly, open, and dedicated to
working in teams committed to both the work and to developing all staff
to their full potential.
The post requires a post-graduate qualification in epidemiology or
medical statistics, and a minimum of three to five years of postdoctoral
research experience. We expect you to be a good team worker, highly
motivated, with good problem-solving and communication skills. You will
need to build strong relations with our demanding customers. You should
be prepared to travel throughout the country and sometimes overseas and
be able to work under pressure to meet tight deadlines which
occasionally cannot be negotiated. A good network in the academic
research community, and with the Office for National Statistics would be
an advantage.
The post is offered on a two-year fixed appointment basis, with the
possibility of extension or permanency. Starting salary will depend on
qualifications and experience. We offer 25 days holiday plus 101/2 days
public holidays. The Civil Service offers a choice of final salary and
stakeholder pension giving you the flexibility to choose the pension
that suits you the best.
Further information and application form can be obtained from 01225
472113.

Closing date for applications: 14th January 2005.
All applications should be submitted with a supporting letter from the
applicants line managers who should comment on their suitability and
availability. The results of any interview will be dependent on a
numeracy test.
The MoD is an Equal Opportunities employer and seeks to reflect the
diverse community it serves. Applications are welcome from anyone who
meets the stated requirements. DASA is a member of the Work Life Balance
Standard.
