Research Fellow/Lecturer in Medical Statistics in
the Infectious Disease Epidemiology Unit (Ref: KF2)
“Thibelo ya TB” Effect of community-wide isoniazid preventive therapy on
tuberculosis among South African gold miners
We have an exciting and challenging opportunity for a statistician to join
a medical research team based at Aurum Health Research in Johannesburg,
South Africa. The post holder will work on a large community randomised
study (“Thibelo ya TB”) to evaluate the effect of community-wide
tuberculosis preventive therapy on tuberculosis incidence and prevalence in
an area of high HIV prevalence. The study will be conducted in goldmines in
three provinces in South Africa, and is part of a prestigious international
collaborative research project (the “CREATE” consortium) funded by the Bill
and Melinda Gates Foundation.
The research is to be carried out in collaboration with Aurum Health
Research in South Africa and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical
Medicine, UK. The post holder will be employed by the London School of
Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and will be based full-time in Johannesburg,
South Africa. The successful candidate will also contribute to the School’s
MSc distance learning programme.
The ideal applicant will have a postgraduate qualification in statistics,
practical experience of working as a medical statistician, considerable
experience of data analysis and database management, familiarity with
epidemiology, an interest in, and practical experience of working with,
health systems in developing countries and excellent communication and
organisational skills. The appointment will be for 3 years in the first
instance with a likelihood of an extension for a further 2 years. The
appointment will be made on the non-clinical research fellow or lecturer
scales with a starting salary between £19,460 and £27,989 depending on
qualifications and experience, plus appropriate overseas allowances.
