Fixed Term Contract Positions

Statisticians/Senior Statisticians

We have 3 vacancies to cover maternity leave on a fixed term contract basis.
The vacancies will start November 2004 to February 2005 and will last for
periods of 6 -15 months to provide handover from the current jobholders at
the start and end of the maternity leave.

Outline of the role

Biostatistics is an integral part of the Global Clinical Function.
Statisticians work as part of a multi-disciplinary teams providing expert
strategic and statistical advice to the development of AstraZeneca products,
from the transfer from Discovery, through regulatory submissions to
commercialisation and life cycle management.  These fixed term contracts are
to cover maternity leaves for staff who are currently working on early phase
development, dose assessment, regulatory and commercial support for a number
of different oncology products.

These fixed term contracts/secondments are open to both Statisticians and
Senior Statisticians.

Key Accountabilities

Statisticians

· Statistical contributions to optimally design individual and/or a series
of clinical studies
· Professional statistical thinking to perform statistical analyses of data
from these studies, ensure appropriate interpretation and reporting of the
results.
· Expert statistical support to commercial colleagues to ensure that complex
analyses are appropriately presented and used in commercialisation
activities.
· Effective communication of study results to wider team, senior managers,
external experts

Senior Statistician

In addition to the above

· Technical leadership to a series of studies (early phase project
developing new methods of assessment, regulatory work or commercial support)
· Coaching less experience staff
· Development of applied statistical techniques
· Contributing to new processes to improve the quality and efficiency of the
group

Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills

Statistician

Qualifications
· BSc in Mathematics or Statistics
· Post-graduate qualification (MSc or PhD) in Statistics, or 3 years
experience in the analysis of clinical trial data

Knowledge
· Statistical Methodology
· Statistical /Mathematical programming

Experience and skills
· Application of Statistical techniques in clinical trial data
· Ability to communicate statistical concepts to non-statisticians both
verbally and in writing
· Ability to influence clinical colleagues
· Presentation of statistical results and issues
· Experience of working in early phase development or oncology

Senior Statistician

Qualifications
· MSc in Medical Statistics with more than 3 years experience as a
statistician in the health care environment
· or
· PhD in Medical Statistics with more than one years experience as a
statistician in the health care environment
· And
· Trial design and analysis from more than one phase of drug development or
extensive experience of early phase studies, or oncology studies
· Extensive experience of clinical data analysis in using a variety of
statistical techniques, with different types of data and issues, e.g.
continuous, discrete, time to event, missing data, modelling

Knowledge
· Pharmaceutical drug development
· Issues arising in clinical study design and analysis
· Statistical programming
· Regulatory guidance

Experience and Skills
· Application of statistical techniques in clinical trial data analysis
· Ability to communicate statistical concepts both verbally and in writing
· Ability to influence clinical colleagues
· Presentation skills
