Guy's, King's & St. Thomas' School of Medicine/ King's College London
PhD Studentship in Statistical Genetics
A Medical Research Council PhD studentship is available beginning October
2004 in statistical genetics. The research project will develop methods
for meta-analysis of genome-wide linkage searches. The studentship will
be supervised by Dr. Cathryn Lewis, in the Division of Genetics and
Development on the Guy’s Campus of Guy's, King's and St. Thomas' School of
Medicine.
Statistical methods are crucial to support molecular genetics studies in
localizing genes for common human diseases. Such studies have been
ongoing for many years, with limited success because the effects of
individual genes are small, and many studies are therefore under-powered.
Meta-analysis methods are therefore useful to pool studies, although many
of the classic epidemiological methods are inappropriate for assessing
statistical evidence across a chromosomal region. This studentship will
assess how powerful meta-analysis methods can be developed for use in
genetic studies, in particular, focusing on the Genome Scan Meta-analysis
method (Lewis et al., Am J Hum Genet 73:34-48, 2003). Further details of
on-going research projects are here

covering letter to including the names and contact details of two
referees. Candidates must possess, or expect to obtain, at least a 2:1
degree in mathematics or statistics, or in a biological subject with a
heavy quantitative content.
MRC studentships are available for EU-residents. For UK residents, the
studentship includes an annual stipend of approximately 12,500 pounds and
University fees. For non-UK residents, fees are covered, but no stipend
is paid.
