29 November 2004, 5.00pm, at the Royal Statistical Society (Tea from 4.30pm)
Cathie Marsh Memorial Lecture
Illuminating the Indices:
The Development and Use of the Indices of Deprivation 2004
Following two extensive public consultations, an academic peer review and a
significant programme of work, the new Indices of Deprivation 2004 were
produced earlier this year. Key to this work is the idea that distinct
dimensions of deprivation can be recognised and measured separately, then
combined in a model to produce a measure of multiple deprivation at the
small area level.
Michael Noble (Director, Social Disadvantage Research Centre, University of
Oxford) will talk about the methodology and process involved in this work,
focussing on the technical and practical problems overcome in the design and
production of the Indices. Helen Bushell (from the Communities Directorate
of the Welsh Assembly) and David Kerrigan (from the London Borough of
Harrow) will focus on the practical application of the English and Welsh
Indices. The lecture will be chaired by Carol Hayden (Head of Research and
Development, Neighbourhood Renewal Unit, Office of the Deputy Prime
Minister).
The seminar is free, and will take place at the Royal Statistical Society
headquarters, 12 Errol Street, London, EC1Y 8LX (see
http://www.rss.org.uk/about/direction.html for a map and directions). It
starts with tea/coffee at 4:30pm, and ends with a drinks reception at
7:00pm, kindly sponsored by the Office for National Statistics. To help us
with catering requirements, if possible please register for this meeting by
emailing the RSS at
