The film 'The day after tomorrow' (see http://www.thedayaftertomorrow.com/)
makes a rather dramatic case for studying past climates.
Climate change has happened in the past. The speed with this has happened is
a guide to speed with which it could happen in the future. While there is no
evidence to suggest that the next ice age will come in 3 days, there is plenty
of evidence that the climate of Ireland, for example, changed from that of
current
northern Siberia to current the Irish climate over a period of 20 years
about
12000 years ago. Further, the opposite may have happened about 1500 years
before that.
Our objective is the quantitiative reconstruction of the climate of
W.Europe since the last ice age.
New statistical tools are needed.
