Estimating Animal Abundance
---------------------------
24 - 28 August 2004
This five-day workshop will introduce participants to the most important
methods of estimating animal abundance in a rigerous but accessible way.
We cover plot sampling, distance sampling, mark-recapture and removal
methods. We will explain the common key statistical concepts underlying
the methods, and build on these to create an understanding of advanced
and recently-developed methods, such as integrated analyses of data from
multiple sources. The workshop will combine lectures with hands-on
computer sessions using custom writen software designed to give
participants experience in using the methods. The material is aimed
primarily at life- and environmental scientists, wildlife managers and
conservation workers, but it may also be of interest to applied
statisticians working in these fields.
Introduction to Distance Sampling
---------------------------------
1-3 September 2004
Distance sampling is the most widely used method for estimating density
and abundance of wildlife populations. The general objective of this
workshop is to give wildlife managers, ecologists and statisticians a
solid grounding in the basic methods for design and analysis of distance
sampling surveys. We will focus on "conventional" distance sampling
methods, as described in the standard reference book "Introduction to
Distance Sampling". Teaching will be a combination of lectures, discussion
groups and computer sessions, where participants will learn how to use the
software Distance.
Advanced Techniques and Recent Developments in Distance Sampling
----------------------------------------------------------------
6-8 September 2004
This workshop will cover the latest advances in distance sampling research
and software, as described in the new book "Advanced Distance Sampling"
(expected publication summer 2004). It is intended for those already
familiar with conventional distance sampling methods. Participants will
learn the use of covariates for modelling the detection function, double-
observer methods for when detection at the line or point is not certain,
spatial modelling of density, automated survey design and adaptive sampling.
We will be using the more advanced features of Distance, and some
practical sessions will use the free statistical software R.
For both distance sampling workshops, participants are encouraged to bring
their own data sets, and can expect to do some preliminary analyses of
their data.
The number of participants on all of the workshops is strictly limited,
and for this reason we encourage you to register as soon as possible.
