FIXED-TERM LECTURESHIP IN MEDICAL STATISTICS
Applications are invited for this fixed-term position in Lancaster's
RAE 6* Statistics research group within the Department of Mathematics
and Statistics. The group currently includes 13 academic staff
(5 professors, 1 reader, 2 senior lecturers, 5 lecturers), 4 research
associates, 21 research students and 18 MSc students.
Applicants should have a commitment to collaborative research with
medical or health scientists, and an enthusiasm for teaching at the
interface between statistical methodology and medical or health science
applications.
The successful candidate will be attached to the Medical Statistics
Unit within the Department. Major activites of the Unit include
methodological and collaborative research, postgraduate training
in biostatistics and support for R&D activities of NHS staff
in the North West region.
Starting salary will be at an appropriate point on the Lecturer
scale (currently 18,893 to 34,838 pounds per year), according to
the experience of the successful candidates.
This post is available for a fixed term of 16 months, with a preferred
start date of 1 July 2004.

Job-description
---------------
The successful candidate will be appointed to the Medical Statistics
Unit, which forms one of three Sections of the Department of Mathematics
and Statistics. The Unit operates a work-allocation model, within which
the mix of each member of staff's contributions to the overall work of
the Unit can be adjusted to reflect their particular areas of expertise
and interest. Individual work-allocations are agreed as part of the
annual appraisal process.
Major areas of work for the Unit include the following.
Research
The Medical Statistics Unit and the Statistics Section operate
largely as a single research group. Current areas of methodological
research strength across the combined group include spatial
statistics, time series and longitudinal data analysis, survival
analysis, computationally intensive statistical methods, extreme
value theory and methods, statistical genetics and graphical
modelling of multivariate data.
Collaborative research with clinicians, biomedical and health
scientists is strongly encouraged. Current areas of collaborative
researh include clinical trial methodology, longitudinal studies,
environmental, veterinary and tropical disease epidemiology.
Teaching
The Medical Statistics Unit is responsible for a one-year full-time
MSc in Medical Statistics, which is delivered with contributions from
the Statistics Section. The MSc has 18 students registered for the
academic year 2003/04. The Unit is also responsible for service
teaching in the biological sciences.
Consulting and Professional Training
The Medical Statistics Unit contributes to a university-wide R&D
support programme for NHS staff in the North West of England. This
includes statistical consultancy and short-course provision.
