Dear All,
We are in the process of launching a new open access medical journal,
PLoS Medicine (www.plosmedicine.org <http://www.plosmedicine.org/> ),
and looking for statisticians who would be willing to review papers for
us. We are accepting papers now, and will launch in the autumn of this
year.
PLoS is a nonprofit organization of scientists and physicians, founded
by Harold Varmus and colleagues in 2000, committed to open-access
(subscription-free) publishing. PLoS Medicine will be our second journal
(we launched PLoS Biology last October - see www.plosbiology.org
<http://www.plosbiology.org/> ) and will publish high-quality peer
reviewed studies across all medical disciplines from basic studies to
large clinical trials and cost-effectiveness analyses. We particularly
encourage submission of research and comment that address global health
issues, neglected diseases, health policy, and debates in medicine.
Along with the research articles PLoS Medicine will publish helpful and
accessible summaries for both health professionals and patients.
As an open access journal, articles in PLoS Medicine will be immediately
and always freely available online from our website and from PubMed
Central. Research papers published in PLoS Medicine will undergo what we
hope will be constructive, but rigorous peer review. In our
collaborative model the process is handled by professional editors in
consultation with academic editors, primarily drawn from our editorial
board, and peer reviewers from the wider medical community.
We have recruited a committed editorial board for PLoS Medicine of more
than 90 excellent researchers and physicians worldwide (see
http://www.plosmedicine.org/medicine/edboard.html
<http://www.plosmedicine.org/medicine/> ) who support our model of
open-access publishing. Already several prominent funding bodies,
including the Wellcome Trust in the UK, the Howard Hughes Institute in
the USA, the Max Planck Institute in Germany, and CNRS and INSERM in
France support publication of research funded by them in open-access
journals.
If you would be willing to review for us please get in contact with me
by sending a brief summary of your professional background and outlining
what you would be willing to review. In any case, we encourage feedback
for what we are planning and hope that people will become involved in
the journal by submitting to us (http://medicine.plosjms.org
<http://medicine.plosjms.org/> ), reviewing for us, and telling
colleagues about it.
Many thanks
