Designing Experiments: some adventures and lessons learned
By Doug Montgomery
Doug Montgomery, Professor of Industrial Engineering at Arizona State
University
Tempe is coming to talk to the North East Local Group of the Royal Statistical
Society on Friday April 23rd at 3.30 in the Continuing Professional
Development room of the Stephenson Centre of University of Newcastle upon
Tyne. Doug is a world famous author, lecturer, industrial statistician and an
excellent speaker. His talk will be about designing experiments and will draw
on his wealth of experience. Doug will pick out the highlights and lowlights
in a relaxed and informal way. Anyone who can make the meeting is well advised
to attend. The meeting is jointly organised with the Quality Improvement
Section of RSS. For further details, please contact Shirley Coleman, Chair of

Dr. Montgomery is an author of eleven books, including Applied Statistics and
Probability for Engineers (1994, with G.C. Runger), Design and Analysis of
Experiments, 4th edition (1997), Introduction to Statistical Quality Control,
3rd edition (1996), Introduction to Linear Regression Analysis, 2nd edition
(1992, with E. A. Peck) ), and Forecasting and Time Series Analysis, 2nd
edition (1990, with L. A. Johnson and J. S. Gardiner). Professor Montgomery
has authored research papers that have appeared in many journals, including
the Journal of Quality Technology, Technometrics, Management Science, Naval
Research Logistics Quarterly, IIE Transactions, Communications in Statistics,
IEEE Transactions on Reliability, Quality and Reliability Engineering
International, IEEE Transactions on Semiconductor Manufacturing, Quality
Engineering, Operational Research Quarterly, International Journal of
Production Research, Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets, and Transportation
Research. He has served as the Applied Probability and Statistics Department
Editor and as the Quality and Reliability Engineering Department Editor for
IIE Transactions and as an Associate Editor of the Naval Research Logistics
Quarterly. He is a member of the Editorial Board of Quality and Reliability
Engineering International, and is currently the Editor of the Journal of
Quality Technology.
Dr. Montgomery's professional interests include several aspects of applied
statistics and quality and reliability engineering, including design of
experiments, time series analysis and forecasting, and applications of linear
models. He also has interests in operations research and statistical methods
applied to modeling and analyzing manufacturing systems. He has lectured
extensively throughout the Americas, Europe and the Far East. Dr. Montgomery
has conducted basic research in empirical stochastic modeling, process
control, and design of experiments. His research has been sponsored by the
Office of Naval Research, the National Science Foundation, the United States
Army, and private industry. He has supervised 20 doctoral dissertations and 35
masters theses.
