Please direct all queries to Professor H.C. van Houwelingen (Head of the
Department of Medical Statistics and Bioinformatics), tel.: +31 (0) 71 527
6826, e-mail: [log in to unmask]

Department: Medical Statistics and Bioinformatics
Working hourst: 38 hours per week
Start date: As soon as possible
Job number: E.04.GJ.30
Closing date: 18 December 2004

The job

As a doctoral student in Medical Statistics m/f, you will be involved in
research and teaching. The department of Medical Statistics and
Bioinformatics participates in the Data Integration Analysis and Logistics
(DIAL) group at the Centre for Medical Systems Biology (CMSB) - one of the
major Dutch centres for genomic research. The department is developing
appropriate tools for the analysis of genetic data from large-scale CMSB
gene-mapping projects. You will study statistical models for gene mapping in
complex diseases, developing new models to be tested on data from ongoing
CMSB research. The models will concern the joint effect of multiple genes
(both additive and epistatic), for gene-environment interaction, and for
genes that affect a series of different traits (pleiotropy). The models are
to be developed for linkage studies based on genome-wide (micro-satellite)
marker scans; TDT studies (or other LD studies) in isolated populations; and
SNP association studies with many SNPs (many candidate genes or even
genome-wide SNP studies).

The department

The Medical Statistics section of the Department of Medical Statistics and
Bioinformatics comprises about 20 people working on statistical modelling,
statistical genetics and the statistical elements of bioinformatics. It is
involved in teaching, statistical consulting for medical research within the
LUMC, and research into bio-statistical methodology. The statistical
genetics group is involved in the European GenomEUtwin project, searching
for genes in complex diseases through the use of large twin registries.

Your profile

You have a Master's degree in Statistics or a related subject (e.g.,
Theoretical Biology, Psychometrics or Econometrics). You are also
experienced with data-analysis software, such as SPSS, SAS, Splus or R.
Ability to work in a team and to communicate with medical/genetic
researchers is of the utmost importance. Good writing and presentation
skills are also essential.

What we offer

The position is full-time (38 hours per week), for a term of three years.
Funding for the fourth year will be sought. The starting salary is EUR1,813
gross per month in the first year, increasing to a maximum of EUR2,283 gross
per month in the fourth year (doctoral student scale of the Collective
Labour Agreement for Dutch universities).

LUMC offers very attractive terms of employment, including an additional 8%
holiday payment, a year-end bonus, a pension with the national Civil Pension
Fund, and, if applicable, a bonus for working unsocial hours. As a
university hospital employee, you will also be covered by our collective
health insurance policy.

In addition, the LUMC offers excellent facilities for continuing
professional education, childcare, and career advice. You may also make use
of various leave arrangements and other extras. You can read about these
extra facilities elsewhere on the website
