Research Fellow in Psychosocial Factors and Mortality
University of Edinburgh
Department of Psychology
You will work on a Scottish Executive-funded project that will investigate the
influence of cognitive function, personality, and lifestyle factors on all-cause
mortality, and mortality from major causes of disease (e.g. lung cancer,
cardiovascular disease). The project is a collaboration between the
Psychology
Department at the University of Edinburgh and the Medical Research
Council's
Social and Public Health Sciences Unit in Glasgow. The already-collected
data
are from a nationwide survey of a representative sample of adults (N =
9000).
This project has the potential to add a great deal to what is known about the
contributions of personal factors to human mortality. It offers an excellent
opportunity to analyse an established, high quality data set and to contribute
to publications. You will join a supportive, productive research team with a
successful track record in publishing high quality studies linking personal
factors with later health and mortality, whose members have expertise in
psychology, social factors, and statistics as applied to health outcomes. You
will be well-organised and self-driven. You will be involved in co-ordinating
the day-to-day running of the study, organising and analysing the data, and
writing drafts of papers for publication. You will be familiar with
epidemiological statistical methods and have an interest in the influence that
psychological and social differences have on mortality. Knowledge of, or an
interest in learning, structural equation modelling would be desirable.
Applications are welcomed from cognitive, biological and social scientists
with
higher degrees, experience of advanced quantitative statistical analyses
and,
ideally, of individual differences in psychological factors. Potential
applicants are encouraged to email Professor Deary ([log in to unmask]) to
find out more about the
work of his cognitive ageing group in general and this exciting opportunity in
particular.
