MSc and PhD Studentships 2004
Thanks to support from the EPSRC, Novartis Pharmaceuticals and the
Information and Statistics Division (ISD) of the Common Services Agency for
NHS Scotland, the Department of Statistics is able to offer various
postgraduate studentships available for October 2004 in any area of
Statistics. The Department has an excellent research record and a large
and active group of postgraduate research students; see

Studentships are available for a one year MSc degree by research and also
for three-year PhD degrees.
The Department of Statistics of the University of Glasgow forms one of the
largest statistical groups in the UK. Research interests of the Department
cover both modern statistical methods and the application of statistical
methods in a wide variety of collaborative projects with many other
disciplines and other scientists both within Glasgow and beyond. There are
strong applied links in many areas, including medicine and veterinary
medicine, ecology and environmental sciences, biological and life sciences,
telecommunications and astronomy, to mention a few.
Research projects are available in many fundamental and applied topics,
including:
* Analysis of images and spatial patterns,
* Neural networks
* Biostatistics including
- Bioinformatics
- Design and analysis of clinical trials
- Decision analysis in drug development
- Genetics
- Veterinary Animal Welfare
* Environmetrics
* Experimental design and optimisation
* Nonparametric modelling
* Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods

The studentship may be awarded in any area of statistics in which there is
expertise in the department.
The studentships will be for one year (MSc) or three years (PhD), starting
in October 2004, and will include full home fees and a maintenance grant.
The grants range in level from 10,500 pounds to 12,000 pounds per annum in
2004/2005, rising slightly in later years. Candidates will be expected to
obtain at least a II(i) honours degree in Statistics (or a subject with a
substantial statistics component) or to already hold such a degree.
