The Content Challenge: Publishing for 'The Future of Higher Education'
City University, London EC1 - Wednesday 21 April 2004

Having scraped through its Second Reading in the most dramatic style at the
end of January, the Higher Education Bill is set to significantly change
the way universities are run. Tuition fees may have caught the headlines,
but the White Paper on 'The Future of Higher Education' also has
significant implications for the provision of learning resources:

-How can universities meet the learning resource needs of a growing student
body with increased expectations of value for money?
-How will these content needs be funded?
-What materials will lecturers need to deliver quality teaching and
learning? Who should create these materials?
-Is e-learning the answer to distance and individualised learning? Who
should create, manage and pay for that content?
-How should university administrators and policy makers interact with other
stakeholders in the content chain to help deliver the Government's strategy
for higher education?

This afternoon conference, organised jointly by the Publishers Association
and City University and supported by the Times Higher Education Supplement,
will attempt to answer these questions by gathering together HE
administrators and policy makers, library and information service managers,
lecturers, publishers, online aggregators and retailers.

We have lined up Chris Barnham (Higher Education Strategy Performance Unit,
DfES) and Diana Laurillard, (e-Learning Strategy, DfES) to talk us through
the vision behind the HE Bill plus a panel of speakers from the university,
library and publishing worlds to respond to these strategic presentations
with the practicalities. What do these plans actually mean for those in the
content chain - from the consumers (universities and students) to
librarians, creators and aggregators? An open forum will then debate the
issues and we hope to emerge with some solid recommendations for
collaboration.

You can book your place at this timely conference by going to
www.publishers.org.uk/contentchallenge or by contacting Harriet Lawrence on
[log in to unmask] or 020 7691 1378. The conference costs £175+vat
or £85+vat for university employees.
