Coming from a local authority background, as I do, I know that
many local authorities have been collecting this information for
years! When I came to Middlesex University I had to stop myself
from doing it when producing questionnaires etc, which felt like a
retrograde step to me.

We are not collecting this either at the moment. We are discussing how it would
be possible to make constructive use of any data we did collect, and are
concerned about how people would view the question on an application form or
joining form.
I would be very interested to hear how anyone who is collecting the data is
using it?
