"Old masters in modern dress" is how renowned Irish printmaker, Tim Mara,
saw his work. Others likened it to the pop-art movements of the 1970s. In
either case, Mara was innovative and experimental in his technique. AHDS
Visual Arts is pleased to announce the launch of the Tim Mara Collection
featuring nearly 150 digital images from the Tim Mara Archive.
Tim Mara was unique in that he worked almost exclusively in the medium of
print, and in particular, the field of photographic screen printing. He
liked to look at familiar objects in familiar ways, without iconising them;
many every day objects are printed and juxtaposed in his prints, driving
this point home, but also exploring other topical issues, such as the
miner's strike, morphic resonance, symbolism and identity.
The pieces date from the early 1970s, when Mara was a student, until his
death in 1997, at which time he was an art practitioner and Professor of
Printmaking at the Royal College of Art. The Tim Mara Trust Fund, which was
set up in 1998, has generously funded this digitisation project.
The Tim Mara Collection is a valuable contribution to the expanding database
of visual arts images available through http://vads.ahds.ac.uk.
