> NEW WORKSHOP
>
>
> Breaking down the barriers to writing: understanding the task and building
> strategies for FE students to begin writing
>
> led by Pat Francis
> 9th September 2004
>
> Background/issues
> There are a number of writing tasks that students have to engage with
> throughout their course. However a large number of them do not feel any
> confidence in writing, or do not understand what is required of them or
> why it is important. They also frequently have blocks and difficulties in
> undertaking all these components, and tutors are often stretched to help
> the wide range of problems the students present.
>
> Participants
> For tutors of Further Education students: Foundation, National Diploma or
> Access. For both studio and theory tutors: in fact this workshop hopes to
> find ways of breaking down any barriers in writing that the students
> perceive in both these areas.
>
> Aims
> To identify:
> * the range of aspects of writing that students have to undertake;
> * to pinpoint the essence of the writing;
> * analyse the styles required; work on the methods of encouraging writing
> in visual and practical ways.
> The over-riding aim of this workshop is to take the fears and blocks out
> of writing, to personalise the processes of writing, and hopefully to make
> it enjoyable, for tutors and students.
> Outcomes
> A range of solutions will be offered: but more importantly this workshop
> aims to help staff find new ways to explain the tasks to students, and to
> aid the process and practice of writing.
>
> Process
> The workshop will include demonstration, identifying of problems, and
> discussion, and then practical sessions to create the tools that
> participants can use. The chance to exchange ideas with others is seen as
> a high priority, as is the opportunity to assess the examples given by the
> workshop tutor. These include the use of stories, metaphor, colour,
> language play, visual and textual analysis, and develops the idea of
> working on viewpoints and different points of view, which helps the
> students deepen their learning.
> The workshop will be highly participatory and it is hoped that
> participants will feel motivated to develop their own methods after the
> session.
>
> About workshop tutor

> theatre for a few years and also ran her own puppet company. She then
> worked as a Librarian at North Staffordshire, Ravensbourne and KIAD
> (Rochester). She currently works as a sessional Dyslexia tutor at KIAD,
> and also runs workshops in a range of study skills, writing skills for
> essays and dissertations, creative thinking and writing, and is developing

> also is contributing to Writing PAD initiatives, has had some articles
> published, and has some creative writing projects in the pipeline.
