My apologies if some of you have already received this, I appear to be
having some difficulty with my e-mail system which returned my original
message as 'undeliverable'.
Blue light is often used as a deterrent to injecting of illegal substances
as well as for 'decorative' effect.
However. any coloured light is likely to have an adverse effect on colour
and tonal
contrast and it is my understanding that this is likely to be particularly
so where blue light is used, as the human eye has fewer blue colour
receptors. The reduction or elimination of contrast is likely to affect
spatial perception, resulting in disorientation for everyone. This is
likely to be exacerbated where the blue light is, or appears to be, dimmer
than a luminaire with good colour rendering properties. Where the eye
condition itself already reduces spatial perception the use of blue light is
likely to be particularly disorientating.
In addition, the blue wavelength in the visible spectrum is also the source
of glare which is likely to be uncomfortable or painful for a number of
people (this is generally referred to as either disability or discomfort
glare) which can result in people with some eye conditions losing their
residual useful vision and, for a time, being rendered blind by the effects
of the blue light.

It would really depend on the lux levels and the impact of the light on
being able to distinguish colour and contrast, eg reading instructions on a
sirginge.
Glasgow's buchannan street actually has blue streetlights running the
length of it (for 'atmosphere' rather than discouraging drug use) and from
speaking to friends, colleages etc, i know opinion on them is divided, they
can aparently make white and yellow appear virtually identical.

Dear All,
What is your opinion on blue light toilets?
In Bournemouth the Council has installed blue lights in their toilets. The
effect of this is that it had the impact of reducing the number of discarded
used needles in public toilets. Apparently for users their veins are almost
impossible to see under blue light thereby making injection very difficult
if not impossible. Results in Bournemouth were 75% reduction in discarded
needles
What do you think of the idea?
