Response to Fullerpod. I am sorry that I do not know your name.
Yes you are quite correct, video has been used for many years for gait
analysis purposes. I bought my first kit in 1978. The problem with video is
that it is analogue and capture is sequential rather than simultaneous.
This means that you cannot arrest time with video. Capture is over several
frames and only one image can be captured within 1/25th of a second. This
eliminates 3D capture for all images are of a different moment in time.
Calibration of the captured frames cannot therefore be considered accurate
for there is no means of matching them with time and the background will
also have moved.Unless multiplexors have changed they too are sequential.
The Orthoscanner is digital and can obtain simultaneous capture that is
also calibrated similar to stereoscopic photogrammatry. How we achieve this
I am afraid is something I am not allowed to make public, for it is
protected. Never the less unless we could calibrate all planes
simultaneously we would not have a castless system that produces accurately
fitting orthoses. The process is now well proven for several scanners UK
wide carry out scans on a daily basis. The capture process is not the
clever part or indeed the expensive part. It is what you do with the
captured information that is the difficult part and extremely costly if you
are to generate your own software. The cost would be prohibitive within a
practice.
I hope this helps clarify any confusion.
Kind regards
Ken
