I am sad to hear that William R Olson has departed mortality. Although I am
not an active participant in this discussion group, I would like to share
what Bill Olson meant to me.
I was a competitive runner in high school with recurrent "shin splints"
which I battled over the course of my high school running carreer. This was
very frustrating and discouraging. In fact, I had to miss the California
state cross country meet, which the rest of my team qualified for, due to my
injuries. That was before a teammate told me about Dr. Olson. I had seen
physical therapy, orthopedists, and an olympic caliber sports medicine
physician during this whole time with no real "cure" to my recurrent running
induced injuries. Dr. Olson was the first podiatrist I had ever met. He did
for me what he did best as a doctor. He solved my problem. I went on to run
my first track season without injuries and nearly qualified for state in the
800. I asked Dr Olson about how he liked what he did for a living. He always
seemed to be enthusiasic. He loved his work. He loved helping people like
me. Well, to make a long story short, Bill Olson is the reason I decided to
go into the podiatric profession. He continued to be very supportive
throughout my education. I spent a month with him doing a clerkship as a
student. There are pearls I learned from him which I will never forget. This
is one of the men I will always hold in highest respect. He was a very kind
hearted person. I was at the PFOLA conference in 2001 and of all the things
I heard there, what I remember most is when he looked me straight in the eye
and said "God bless you, Jeff, God bless you." I don't know what I did to
deserve his praise, but it elevated me to want to be better, to do better.
To this day, when I think of Bill Olson, I feel a desire to be better, and
do better, particularly in my chosen profession. If you have read this
personal account, I hope you get a better sense of what this man meant to me
personally and realize that he will be missed by many.
Sincerely,
Jeff Hagen, DPM resident
Encino-Tarzana Regional Medical Center
