Hello to all,
I promised to keep you all informed about the outcome of treating a
painful callus under the meta 2.
In contradiction with the negative results from echo and others
scans, the symptoms (painful swelling with callus under meta 2)
seemed to fit the description of the Predislocation Syndrome as
described in an article published in JAPMA (April 2002). It was Kevin
who gave us the hint to look into that article in order to find a
possible explanation for the problems of our patient. As prescribed
in the article, we taped the proximal phalanx of the 2nd digit to
keep it out its dorsiflexed position and apparently this helped
significantly. For more comfortable and permanent use we will now
install a metatarsal sling pad.
So thanks to everyone, especially Kevin who pushed us to look further
than the negative scans and examine the phenomenon more thoroughly
with our own eyes.Too much confidence in medical technology (here
scans) is not always useful to get to the right diagnosis. A good and
experienced eye is still a "conditio sine qua non" for good
podiatric practice.
Thanks to all agian. for ne more happy patient.
Bart
