We are currently undertaking a project into the plantar palpation of the
metatarsal heads in order to determine the accuracy of different methods
used to identify their location. This is in an attempt to improve the way
we locate force sensors under the metatarsal heads. We are interested in
comparing static measures (drawing around metatarsal head) dynamic measures
(e.g. ink print on Harris Beath Mat)and movement of the metatarsal heads in
the shoe. We have found a paper by M.Lord (1992) that compares palpation
location with peak pressure location and a paper by S Spooner (1994) that
compares palpation to x-ray. Does anyone know of any further research that
may have been undertaken into the accuracy of the palpation of the
metatarsal heads ?
