I heard an interesting anecdote the other week from a seventy-eight year-
old gentleman who is fortunate enough in these difficult times to receive a
monthly script for 100mgs of sildenafil citrate (Viagra) to augment his
weekly work-out. A type II diabetic and a moderately heavy smoker for 60
years he now has to contend with ED as well as PVD although it could be
said his limp is more pronounced with the latter. Strangely, he notes, that
during the 36 hours after taking the medication, his claudication distance
improves dramatically from 100m (flat) to distances of up to 1 km (flat and
incline). Could it be the residual effects of an endorphine rush or is
there any evidence that a smooth muscle relaxant can promote peripheral
vasodilation?
