Dear Gareth,
The Best research on OH Insoles I have found is by Patrick Carley (Professor
of Physical Therapy at AIC) regarding a bulk mail Postal centre in Oregon
where he looked at using Polyurethane Inserts for Postal Workers but that is
more on Pain Reduction over a 3 month period than actual increased
Productivity yield.

We do quite a lot of Occupational Health work in regards to Insole provision
and Foot Healthcare in factories. There have been a number of small scale
studies that I have supported in terms of samples and technical literature
but have not been written up yet (Why does that not surprise me!) Having had
a stand at a couple of big Health & Safety Expos at the NEC in Birmingham, I
lost count of the number of H&S "Professionals" who asked why they might
need insoles inside Safety Boots and when told about knee pain etc said that
"Oh they hadn't thought of that" never mind having a Podiatrist as part of
the OH Team. In the UK it is European law for Employees to wear Safety Boots
but different Employers have a varied outlook on who has to pay for them, a
standard practice is for the company to pay £20 towards the cost of Safety
Boots and the employee can upgrade if they want to. Seeing as the metal
toe-capped Safety Boot is a Protective Envelope for the foot and the Foot is
"not designed" to go inside a metal cage for 8-10 hours a day, I would love
to know of any more research done on this subject.
I have heard a story where the use of a Podiatrist at Dublin Airport helped
to avert a strike with baggage handlers and maintenance staff, when EU
regulations forced them to wear Saftey Boots for the first time. Evidently
the fact that the Management went out of their way to address the issues of
their employee's footpain was well worth the cost of 2 days of the Pod's
clinical time. At the end of the day they still had to wear safety footwear
but the employees felt cared for and listened to so perhaps a triumph of
employee relations and marketing perception mixed with clinical efficacy and
the raised Value of Podiatry. But that is anecdotal and not quantifiable for
research I am afraid.
Kind Rgds

Subject: Orthoses use and Productivity in the workplace
Hi there,
Thanks for you comments regarding children and
orthoses. Much appreciated.
Does anyone know of any evidence based research that
has been done regarding orthoses use in the work place
and increased productivity.
Might be a long shot on this question but your
thoughts are welcome as this could be a very hard
topic to define for research purposes.
regards,
=====
