In your experience, can phasic muscle asymetry be corrected through foot
mechanics alone, or do you use muscle re-training techniques at the same
time - especially at the hip?
The reasong I ask is that I am seeing alot of post polio patients at the
moment with uni-lateral symptoms presenting on the unaffected side. The
pathomechanics seem related to the unbalanced cyclic natutre of their gait
but I have not wanted to start using AFO's etc without 1st re-training'
there gait style.
One interesting trend is a 'mock' Trendellenburg gait caused by quad/
hamstring imbalance. The eccentric quad firing having a concentric impact
on the pelvis resulting in forcefull hip rotation - the hamstrings do not
seem capable of co-contracting enough to stop this motion. This was only
seen when the patienty was pre-fatigued.
My approach has been referals for one-on-one Pilates and so far is proving
successful.
Can we really re-train gait without this approach?
Thanks
