Subject: Re: Responsibilities in the Provision of Care (UK)
I have no problem with the concept of State provision for Foot Services.
The issue for me is what constitutes a 'Health' provision and what
constitutes 'Personal or Social Care' provision. These are NOT the same.
Traditionally, podiatrists have provided both components. Prospectively we
do not have the resources so to continue due to the increase in chronic
disease and our role therein.
Foot HEALTH services - Provided by the good old NHS!
Personal and Social Care - Provided by other agencies with STAFF TRAINED AND
COMPETENT IN THE DELIVERY THEREOF.
We need to 'LET GO WITH CONFIDENCE' and we can only do that when there are
appropriately competent people to let go to....
Regards
D

Subject: Responsibilities in the Provision of Care (UK)
The recent debate on 'toenail maintenance' highlighted a significant issue
in UK podiatry practice - namely what responsibilities does a State have in
providing foot health services to its citizens (or subjects) as part of and
overall health and welfare policy.
There are no clear guidelines to who can and who cannot access free podiatry
care in the UK just as there are no guidelines what services should be
provided by NHS departments. Eligibility varies enormously depending on what
area of the country you live, as does the interpretation on what constitutes
social and medical 'need'.
Without thinking about budgetary constraints, can I ask for opinions on
what podiatry services should be provided by the state - free at the point
of source - and to whom?
Sincerely
Mark Russell
