Knowing Mary Macleod the Chief Podiatrist in Higland very well and a little
about the re-design of her service, I know that the offer of avulsion would
have been made as a positive alternative to lifetime care for an intractable
problem. I believe we have a duty of care in the NHS to provide curative
options wherever we can. The 'spin' put on this by the media is unbelievable
and I know many of the Scottish Pod. Managers are angry at the response from
the MSP. As for the media - sensational journalism is right... But having
gotten some exposure we need to make the most of it!
I am considering proposing a nationwide "NO MORE ROUTINE TOENAILS" campaign
where as NHS Pod Managers we choose a date and from thereafter instruct our
staff to do the same as Mary has done. Maybe THEN the government will waken
up to the fact that there is a crisis in the provision of its much vaunted
'personal care' which, although including nail care, has made no fuinding
available in Social Services to allow us to train people to provide this
cosmetic service.
More power to your elbow Mary.
But you'd EXPECT me to say that wouldn't you?
David

I can't honestly believe that all he required was simple nail cutting, he
must have had some nail pathology which required frequent treatment, for
example severe involution.
I don't think we should take this story at the superficial level at which it
has been written. Obviously patient confidentiality would prevent the
Podiatry department from saying what was actually wrong with him.
Another example of sensationalist journalism!

Just read this article on the BBC website, at last a public debate may be
begining on providing a cure to the people unable to manage their nails.
