My limited knowledge of the Orthoscanner has lead me to beleive that it
use's the data collected to 'prescribe' a pair of FFO's. (I will be quite
happily be told other wise)
If this is the case, if it is only measuring the foot's mechanics, could
it possibly be responsible for blocking a normal compensatory pathway that
the rest of the body needs.
As a podiatrist working for a CAD/CAM FFO company, with experience working
for other non CAD/CAM companies, I beleive that the manufacturing method
is not the key issue, rather the decision protocol used to make this
decision. An example being the patient who experiences medial arch
irritation. The practititoner may blame the orthoses, but in reality a
medial deviation of the COM due to poor gluteus medius control may
actually be the problem and no matter what is done to the orthoses, the
problem will remain.
If any practitioner, either computer or flesh and blood, does not identify
the true patho-mechanics, then we may be doing an injustice to the patient.
