Children Walking Well
Australian Postgraduate Research Award (Industry)
This scholarship is funded by an ARC Linkage-Project grant and will
provide support for 3 years on a full-time basis for a research project
leading to a PhD. The aim of the project is to examine the factors
contributing to consumer decision-making about footwear choice, consumer
knowledge about the impact of footwear on children’s activity and
development, and to assess patterns of footwear usage among Australian
children aged 4 to 12 years. The applicant will work with a
multidisciplinary team of researchers and research students from the
University of Sydney and the Australian Catholic University, and with
Clarks’ Australian footwear design team. The researchers are examining the
relationship between footwear styles, anatomical profile, biomechanics and
physical activity. Ultimately, the findings will lead to recommendations
about footwear that is complementary to mobility and appropriate to
growth, development and safety for children.
Applicants must have an Honours 1 or 2A degree in an appropriate field of
study (eg Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Exercise Science, Human
Movement, Psychology, or Behavioural Science). Experience with focus
groups and survey design would be an advantage. As the project involves
working with children, applicants must not be prohibited by the Child
Protection Act from seeking, undertaking, or remaining in child-related
employment. Applicants must be Australian citizens, Australian permanent
residents or New Zealand citizens. The scholarship stipend is $23,886 in
2004 (tax exempt).
