Dear Colleagues,
I am an infrequent contributor to this mailbase, but an avid follower of
debate which in general I find to be stimulating, dignified, and of a nature
that stretches my knowledge and skills as a teaching practitioner/manager.
There comes a point, however, when a boy cannot contain himself any longer.
I am a Member of the Society of Chiropodists & Podiatrists.
I do not, however, agree with everything the Society does nor do I suspect
does ANY member. I will not abuse this forum to voice my own particular
concerns.
My membership of the Society is contingent therefore NOT on my agreement
with, nor mindless acceptance of every policy, procedure or plan produced.
Indeed, in a democractic organisation (as in any democracy) I simply do not
have the RIGHT to have things my own way all the time. Part of life's rich
tapestry is learning to respect and live and practise together with people
who have different views on everything from religion to Root theory.
I am sure I was not alone in breathing a big sigh of relief when Mr Russell
announced his final contribution to the mailbase around 3 months or so ago.
For him to return in such spectacular fashion with further attacks on the
professional body is, I suggest, further evidence of a professional
immaturity that the mail base regulars could do without. Particularly
inappropriate, I feel are the comments targeted at specific individuals
within the Council.
I have no vested interest in the Society nor do I consider myself to be a
"Society Man". I have, however, come to have a deep professional respect for
people like Ralph Graham who has been highly supportive and positive on any
occasion I have had cause to personally engage with him. In terms of
strategic awareness, I rank him highly. He has earned my professional
respect by standing up and being counted (nowhere more vulnerably than at
the Ballot Box), and therefore has the right, in my view, to be accorded the
respect that all our elected members are due both in National and
Professional Government.
There are many issues facing NHS managers that many of us in these positions
feel may not be moving forward as fast or with as much clarity as we would
like to see. HOWEVER.... the PROPER professional response to these
situations is to continue to work dilligently within existing structures to
influence and gain the respect of colleagues via the quality and tone of
one's professional efforts in work and in inter professional debate that
opens the door to the environment within which constructive criticism may be
given and received.
I feel that Mr Russell would do well to observe these basic principles of
democratic engagement. If he feels that he has personal issues with
individual members, my advice to him would be "please deal with these
privately, and spare the multi-professional mailbase the embarrassment of
dirty linen and personal grievances being aired in the public domain."
This member, therefore, has no interest whatsoever in hearing about such
issues on this mailbase.
I offer these lines reflectively and in the spirit of professional respect,
but nonetheless not a little trepeditious of the response they may engender.
Best wishes.
