Yes Ralph, we are well aware of the difficulties the Society has in
influencing government policy towards professional practice. It must be
terribly frustrating to be considered as an irrelevance by the DoH and the
HPC. The impact that the Society has made in determining improvements in
podiatry provision – both in terms of clinical delivery and a workable
legislative framework - is plain for all to see.
You write; ‘we therefore have to construct a plan that takes account of
that position.’ Am I to understand then that professional strategy has yet
to be formulated and that the ‘plan’, as published, refers only to
corporate and executive functions? If so, I am disappointed. You wrote
last July that you were in the process of outlining your own vision for
the future. Why not publish it alongside the executive and corporate
summaries? Surely your primary objectives for practice reform are of equal
importance than ‘ensuring members receive their 2004 diaries on time’, or
that ‘Fellmongers is kept in good decorative order’?
I am sorry that you still refuse to discuss these issues. I’ve no idea
what the secrecy is all about. Maybe we should have an Inquiry? Seriously
though, would it not be easier to outline your own views on which
direction you would like to steer towards? Three years we’ve been asking
you to participate in debate. That is entirely different than asking
you ‘to justify policy’. Isn’t it curious that you always seem to adopt a
defensive position on such matters?
So you won’t discuss professional direction with a non-member. So be it.
You are seeking to attract some 3,500 new members into the fold. Don’t you
think a policy manifesto might facilitate this aspiration? You won’t be
getting my subscription until you do!
Best wishes
MR
