Hallo * my name is Gerhard Dirmoser In the last year I did the "25 years - ars electronica study" which consist of 8 parts. All parts are available under: www.servus.at/kontext/ars/ Some of your questions were also my questions.media art /vs/ new media art /vs/ new art /vs/ artIn the "memory theatre" I used a very short form of definitions to think about this. http://www.servus.at/kontext/ARS/ars_cluster_E_1_1.ppt.pdf In the center of the poster you will find: art as interaction, art as scene, art as game, art as transformation, art as therapy, art as social issue, art as transmission, art as action, art as performance, art as broadcast, art as program, art as mathematics, *.. and so on (about 60 short definitions). It was not necessary to use "media art" or "new media art". Another solution you can find in the book/exhibition "future cinema" (ZKM). They tried to look on new media art with the analytical "tools" of cinema/film. I think they did it in a very interesting way. Very interesting installations were possible only by use of computers and complex technology. In this book we can study which "features" were addedin order to construct interactive installations. +++ I think the material of 25 years (not only of ars electronica) will give us a lot of answers. Most of the terms are only interesting for 5-8 years ! You can test this with the help of the cluster of terms I have collected (out of 9000 pages ars electronica materials). URL http://www.servus.at/kontext/ARS/Begriffscluster_ars_1_3.ppt With the help of the AEC search engine you can see in which year some terms were used and in which year they came out of use.I think this very young field of art will still invent new terms and test them for some years. +++ Some one told me, that Oliver Grau (Berlin) will build a thesaurus for the new media arts. I hope this work can be done within 2-3 years (it is a very hard work J). When this work is done, we will be able to define topic maps or to use complex search engines based on similarity matches. Sorry for my poor english
