Thought I'd just add a couple of points on what is a fascinating subject
that I've grappled with on and off for several years (as Angela Murphey and
Paul Connel can testify!). I have yet to see a perfect way of classifying
photographs - as was mentioned, they are very tricky things to actually
catalogue, being both an object in themselves and records of objects/events.
However, I'd recommend taking a look at Moving Here
http://www.movinghere.org.uk <http://www.movinghere.org.uk/> , Leodis
http://www.leodis.org/default.asp and Ingenious http://www.ingenious.org.uk
<http://www.ingenious.org.uk/> as examples of different approaches to
cataloguing and classifying images. I would also recommend SEPIA. No single
system seems to fit all needs so I guess it's up to you to adapt what you
want for your project. What I really would recommend is that you get your
system sorted out before starting the project and avoid developing trying to
develop the system as you go.
