We've been using dynamic watermarking in our image management software
since 2001: the nice thing in doing so is that, since you are altering
the source image for delivery anyhow, you can also alter the size and
quality of the image, giving you complete control over the exact image
surrogate delivered to the end user.
Dynamic watermarking does of course take more processing time, but a
well-crafted image caching system largely negates this, allowing you the
best of both worlds.
