Hi,
One thing that seems to becoming apparent in this discussion is that the
Science FTEs that NPG are using for each institution lack consistency. I
argued with NPG that it was unfair to count environmental sciences,
geographers, sports science/sport therapy in our Science FTE figures as
there was no likelihood that staff and students in these areas would ever
make use of EMBO Journal/EMBO Reports. I can confirm that the FTE Science
figure that was used for the pricing of this online only package for our
institution not only excluded these subject areas, but also the following
subject areas psychology, health sciences, computer scientists and
engineers, mathematicians, physics and astronomy.
The result of the calculations was an increase in price from £875 to £1431 +
VAT.
If these other FTEs had been included we would have almost certainly had to
cancel the journal, as it was we reluctantly ordered the institutional
online only site license for 2004.
Cheers
Lesley

Subject: Re: price increase of the EMBO journal for 2004
Like Jason Harper, I suggested to the NPG sales rep. that the price for our
institutional licence to The EMBO Journal should be based on staff and
student FTEs in our School of Biology & Biochemistry. He insisted that all
our science staff and students – including psychologists and geographers -
had to be counted in order to be given a quote for 2004. Interestingly,
unlike Jason, I was permitted to omit computer scientists and engineers. The
result of the calculations was an increase in price from £864 to £2061
