Oxford University Selects Bowker’s Ulrich’s Serials Analysis System for
New Periodicals Coordination Project
Largest Academic Library Serials Collection in U.K. Embarking on
Rationalization of Research Collections
East Grinstead, West Sussex, United Kingdom – November 19, 2004 – Oxford
University Library Services (OULS), the integrated service of Oxford
University’s 40 libraries, has selected Bowker’s Ulrich’s Serials Analysis
System for its first-ever initiative to review and coordinate serials
holdings, announces Bowker UK, a division of the United States based R.R.
Bowker.
Oxford University Library Services has a combined holding of
over 11 million items, forming the largest academic library collection in
the UK, and second only in size to the British Library.
“OULS has selected Ulrich’s Serials Analysis System as the
most suitable tool to gather and evaluate our collection. We hope, by
using Ulrich’s Serials Analysis System, to explore new ways of reducing
duplication and pave the way for the introduction of subject- and needs-
based budgets rather than historical budgets,” notes Dr. Alice Keller,
Head of Collection Management at Oxford. Keller also explains that
analysis gathered through USAS will allow for greater flexibility within
subject areas and will help in exploring ways of integrating print and
electronic resources in the most cost-effective manner. “A breakdown of
current expenditure by vendor will also provide further valuable insights
into ways of rationalizing OULS procurement procedures,” continues Keller.
Bowker’s Ulrich’s Serials Analysis System leverages the strength of the
Ulrich’s serials database which offers bibliographic data on more than
250,000 popular and consumer magazines, electronic journals, scholarly
journals, business and trade publications, and newspapers; and provides a
serials evaluation toolkit enabling research institutions to analyze the
print and electronic serials in their collections. Providing customizable
and downloadable reports driven by an institution's own holdings, Ulrich's
Serials Analysis System allows library professionals to compare their
collections, or a group of collections, to the universe of active serials
or to a core subset of titles in close to 900 subject areas.
“We are proud to have been selected by one of the United Kingdom’s most
esteemed universities as they embark on this new initiative to rationalize
their current resources,” said Doug McMillan, head of the UK
Operations. “We are confident that Ulrich’s Serials Analysis System will
enable them to accomplish their current goals as well as review spending
allocations on an annual basis and as a result provide the most
appropriate titles for their students and library community.”
