The problem seems to be the font used in those articles ("MGaramond-bold" my Acrobat Reader says).

Dear Daviess
You do not say which problem Acrobat Reader 6.0.1 will solve - I have tried
installing Acrobat Reader 6.0.1 but it has not solved the particular
problem I was having (16 Dec .........problems we are having with the
journal Evidence-based Healthcare as delivered by Science Direct (Elsevier)
at the following address
<http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/journal/14629410>http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/journal/14629410
- we are unable to read any pdf document using Acrobat Reader 6 in volumes
4 and 5 only.)
Maybe you could have another look at this for us.
Thanks.
Nuri
