John:
Electronic journal sites do not always include the journal covers; for
example Science Direct includes just a sample cover, not the 'real ones'.
(Highwire does in some cases, but the image is often very small.) Maybe
this is a bit like the difference between records in cd format and the
vinyl editions, for those of us old enough to remember ;-)
I have had cases in which one of 'my' researchers has had their article
chosen to be the cover article of a certain issue, which is kind of an honour,
but we can't visualize this.
Publishers obviously go to certain lengths to design these covers, it is
definitely part of their branding mechanism, yet electronic versions often
don't take this into account.
I also note that while PNAS via Highwire includes journal covers, PNAS via
Pubmed Central does not.
Thank you.
