Hi All

Following Lesley's email regarding the backfiles which are now available.

Taylor and Francis are pleased to confirm that we have begun the huge task of digitising the backfiles of some of our journals.

We have started small - just 5 so far:

Disability and Society - now goes back to Volume 1 (1986)
Journal of Modern Optics - now goes back to Volume 1 (1954)
Mortality - now goes back to Volume 1 (1996)
Urban Studies - now goes back to Volume 1 (1964)
International Journal of Radiation Biology - now goes back to Volume 1 (1959)

In July 2003 we met to discuss our strategy in publicising the availability of the archival years, and we decided to do the following (although this list is by no mean comprehensive):

We did not want to post to the main list-servs because we were concerned about forcing a 'sales pitch' onto the readers.

Instead we decided to work with the Subscription Agents to announce the availability to subscribers through their Customer Bulletins. We apologise if any subscribers did not receive a message. Harrassowitz also released information in their newsletter which was then posted to lib-license in August 2003.

We sent an alert to any registrants of the relevant journal to SARA, our contents alerting service, and added banner adds to our website with active links to the journal. We included the information on any promotional and renewal material and placed advertisements in external publications.

Of course, after the effort and expense involved in digitising an archive, it is in the interest of Taylor and Francis to make sure that users are aware that it is available. We are continuing the project with more journals and will be pleased to announce to this list as the backfiles become available. We will also email institutional administrators registered on Metapress.

Once again please accept our apologies if you were not aware of the availability and if this has caused you any inconvenience.

Any questions please get in touch.

Kind regards
Ashleigh

Hi,

Whilst doing a manual title by title check (is there any other way?) on our
access to our T&Fsubscriptions on MetaPress I came across the following
titles where all the backfiles are now available online. As I hadn't heard
any announcements about these backfiles I thought that other members of the
list might be interested, although I know a few of you have already
discovered this. Of course, since I was only checking our own subscriptions
there may be other titles published by T&F that also have backfiles now
available.

Disability and Society - now goes back to Volume 1 (1986) - complete
backfiles only currently available on T&F MetaPress
Journal of Modern Optics - now goes back to Volume 1 (1954) - complete
backfiles available on T&F MetaPress and Ingenta/Ingenta Select
Mortality - now goes back to Volume 1 (1996) - complete backfiles available
on T&F MetaPress and Ingenta/Ingenta Select
Urban Studies - now goes back to Volume 1 (1964) - complete backfiles only
currently available on T&F MetaPress

It's a shame we had to discover this by accident - is there not a way that
the institutional administrator could be alerted when subcriptions that they
take have additional content loaded?

Cheers
Lesley
