Dear All

RCAHMS and RCAHMW are currently sorting this out for our needs and as
part of digital archiving standards for both organisations. When we
have
decided on the collections management and technical metadata needed
for
images in the first instance (vector graphics, geophysics, databases
etc. etc. also being tackled and to follow), we can post as general
information and will welcome comment.

Thanks for this. I take your point that the NOF standards need to be
observed, and I'm certainly keen to avoid wheel re-invention. Most of
their
recommendations concern the technical aspects of image capture, file
types
etc. However, on the specific issue of metadata for images, to quote
the NOF
technical website

"There is, however, no single standard for this type of metadata."

This was last revised in 2001 and things may have moved on though.

Looked at in one way, all of the current content of MIDAS could be
viewed as
a metadata standard for digital images (i.e. it will have a number,
may
depict monuments, may depict a particular place, may depict an event,
may
have associated People Organisations etc, and will certainly be a
Resource.
