Dear Ed,
Yes, but the NOF approach has become a 'de facto' local Government standard because museums and archives (in Yorks & Humber region anyway) are now regarding it as the thing to follow (rightly or wrongly, out of date or not), rather than SEPIA, Exif, or EH's ViewFinder. It seems to me that MIDAS should at least point this out.
Cheers,
Neil

Hi Neil,
Thanks for this. I take your point that the NOF standards need to be
observed, and I'm certainly keen to avoid wheel re-invention. Most of their
recommendations concern the technical aspects of image capture, file types
etc. However, on the specific issue of metadata for images, to quote the NOF
technical website
"There is, however, no single standard for this type of metadata."
http://www.peoplesnetwork.gov.uk/content/ts_creation.asp#metadata
This was last revised in 2001 and things may have moved on though.
Looked at in one way, all of the current content of MIDAS could be viewed as
a metadata standard for digital images (i.e. it will have a number, may
depict monuments, may depict a particular place, may depict an event, may
have associated People Organisations etc, and will certainly be a Resource.
I put the results of my (admittedly brief) consideration of image metadata
issues into the file archive for this list at
