Forwarded for interest: especially relevant to librarians, but there is
overlap with MIDAS in things like indexing of corporate and personal names.
Also interesting to see how the task of bringing together lots of
differerent standards can be addressed.

Subject: IFLA Draft Statement of International Cataloguing Principles
(Please forward to others as you feel is appropriate. A formal
announcement will be coming soon from the meeting organizers.)
The participants of the first IFLA Meeting of Experts on an
International Cataloguing Code (IME ICC), held in Frankfurt this past
July 2003, have approved a final draft Statement of International
Cataloguing Principles. The final draft of the statement has been posted
on our conference website at http://www.ddb.de/news/ifla_conf_papers.htm
Please see its introduction for more explanation of the significance of
this important draft that is intended to replace and update the 1961
Paris Principles that formed the basis for essentially all major
cataloguing codes used worldwide today. It is further intended to serve
as the basis for international standardization in cataloguing.
The draft Statement will be the foundation document for future regional
meetings of cataloging rule makers and cataloging experts worldwide:
2004 Buenos Aires for Latin American countries
2005 Alexandria, Egypt for the Middle Eastern countries
2006 Seoul, Korea for Asian countries
2007 Durban, South Africa for African countries
