1. COMMENT
-------------------
Editorial

There are two slight themes of this issue of the Internet Resources
Newsletter: Further Education, and the construction industry.

In the A-Z section below there are several websites which may be of interest
to those in further education - from Broadcast, the quarterly publication
from the SFEU, to a number of professional trade associations, career and
jobs sites, and the Help is at Hand site. This month I also seemed to find a
number of sites of interest to those involved in building and construction
and these will also be found in the A-Z below.

This month's reviewed book - Sams Teach Yourself Internet and Web Basics All
in One is the sort of title that should be of interest to many people in FE.
Thanks to an arrangement with Pearson and EEVL, this book is available,
until the end of March, at a substantial discount (and less than at
Amazon.uk) from:
http://www.pearsoned.co.uk/bookshop/subject.asp?item=6252&affid=EVL

Judging by the popularity of Pinakes, the subject launchpad,
http://www.hw.ac.uk/libwww/irn/pinakes/pinakes.html there's considerable
interest from readers of the Internet Resources Newsletter in subject
gateways. Many readers may think of subject gateways as being primarily of
interest to those in higher education. However, gateways are often also
relevant to those in other sectors.

A series of articles in the most recent issue of Ariadne explain how the
subject gateways which make up the Resource Discivery Network can help those
involved in further education find useful networked information. See:

Arts & Creative Industries: What's in Artifact for Further Education?
http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue38/artifact/

Engineering, Mathematics & Computing: What's in EEVL for Further Education?
http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue38/eevl/

Geography & Environment: What's in GEsource for Further Education?
http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue38/gesource/

Health, Medicine & Life Sciences: Further Education and BIOME
http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue38/biome/

Hospitality, Leisure, Sport & Tourism: How Altis Can Help the Further
Education Sector
http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue38/altis/

Humanities: What's in Humbul for Further Education?
http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue38/humbul/

Physical Sciences: What's in PSIgate for Further Education?
http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue38/psigate/

Social Science, Business & Law: What's in SOSIG for Further Education?
http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue38/sosig/

What the Resource Discovery Network is Doing for Further Education
http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue38/williams/

Incidentally, one of the services mentioned above, EEVL the Internet guide
to engineering, mathematics and computing, want to know what you think of
the service as a whole, and how you think it could be improved. There is a
short questionnaire at: http://www.eevl.ac.uk/2004-questionaire/ Those who
complete the questionnaire will be entered into a draw to receive one of
four #25 amazon gift vouchers.

For anyone looking for more links to relevant websites of interest to
Further Education, Weblinks http://www.sheffcol.ac.uk/links/ is a good
source.

Internet Resources Newsletter by email and RSS

Over 23,000 people now subscribe to the free email version of this
Newsletter. Very many thanks go to Willco who distribute the email version.
To subscribe, at no cost, go to http://www.hw.ac.uk/libwww/irn/irn.html

The Internet Resources Newsletter has an RSS feed. This means that you can
read its 'headlines' (essentially the Table of Contents) through a
feedreader or service such as Bloglines' My Blogs, and then link through to
the sections of interest. The RSS feed is available at:
http://www.hw.ac.uk/libwww/irn/irn.rss This is a .rss file and therefore it
must be processed (or 'parsed') before it can be displayed. The easiest way
to do this is via Bloglines' My Blogs, or via a feedreader, such as those
listed in the RSS Primer.

come across Web sites which we feel deserve slightly more than a passing
mention. Each month we will pick out one or more such sites, and give them a

and be of interest or potential interest to academics. After lengthy
discussions we have decided, with incredible creativity :-), to call these:
Nice Web Sites. Details of previous Nice Web Sites are available in the Nice
Web Site Archive.

SAMS Teach Yoursel Internet and Web Basics All in One
by Ned Snell, Bob Temple, and T. Michael Clark
SAMS Publishing
0-672-32533-0, June 2003
#21.99

Looking for an ultimate, basic guide to the web? This comprehensive work is
probably what you're looking for. Running to 45 chapters (749 pages) it
covers everything from the very basics: what is the internet and what can
you do there; basic hardware and software requirements; right through to
creating graphics for your own web pages and web publishing. I think it's
great value for money, as well.

If you're already quite familiar with the Internet, and want more detailed
information about an advanced aspect, this may not be the best book, simply
because it contains a lot of basics. However, if you're new to the Internet,
or if you have a little knowledge, but find yourself constantly confused by
its more detailed aspects, this book is perfect as a reference, and is easy
to use or dip into for what you need. There are simple explanations of how
to configure e-mail, use chat rooms and instant messenger, and work with
mailing lists; chapters on choosing and updating web browsers, details about
downloading files, web safety, buying on the web, creating web pages and
getting them onto the Internet and a chapter on creating your own graphics,
buttons and animation.

The introduction to the book says it is aimed at people who:
7 Are new to the Internet
7 Want to create great looking web pages without getting a computer science
degree
7 Want to personalise their web pages with beautiful custom graphics and
animations
7 Don't appreciate being treated like imbeciles

I would add that it would also be useful for anyone who has just got a
computer at home, especially those with children who are using it. Also
those who are familiar with the Internet but want know a bit more about what
they're doing will find this a handy reference tool.
