Commission Staff Working Document profiles role of wide-screen and high
definition in global digital TV roll-out (19/01/2004)
Promised in the Commission's recent Switchover Communication, this
Commission Staff Working Paper argues that the wide-screen (16:9) format can
help accelerate the transition to digital television. Broadcasters can use
wide-screen to differentiate the quality of digital television from analogue
TV, with its traditional old movie screen format using the 4:3 ratio. The
document also notes that the time is ripe for a revival of high definition
television (HDTV) in Europe.

-- EVENT
4 - 6 February 2004
13th NID Workshop
Athens, Greece
The workshop will gather participants in the projects funded within the
Nanotechnology Information Devices (NID) pro-active initiative. The workshop
will stage the review meetings of 20 projects in the NID initiative, plenary
presentations from invited speakers, and working group meetings on advanced
research topics in nanotechnology and nanoelectronics. The NID initiative is
part of the Information Society Technologies priority of the 5th Framework
Programme of the European Union. It focuses on the application of a broad
range of nano-scale technologies to information processing and on the
perspectives for replacing mainstream approaches, such as CMOS, when they
will reach the expected physical limits for miniaturisation.

Call for proposals shows high interest in IST research programme
(19/01/2004)
The high interest of the European research community in the Information
Society Technologies (IST) priority of the 6th Framework Programme of the
European Union is clearly shown by the results of the evaluation of the
second call for proposals. 1079 proposals were evaluated and of those 276
proposals representing a total request of 1.054 MEUR have passed all
eligibility and evaluation thresholds. The EU has allocated an indicative
525 MEUR for the call. The response to the call reflects both a high interest
in the IST priority among the European research environments and a very good
overall quality of the proposals. The electronic submission was very popular
with more than half the applications using this way of submitting proposals
and it is now being considered to make the next IST call the first
all-digital call under the European Framework programmes. The call targets a
number of key research areas to improve European competitiveness and improve
the quality of life for European citizens. Among the areas covered by the
call are open development platforms, applications for mobile workers and
users, embedded systems and advanced displays. It is expected that the last
contracts will be finalised for projects to start in summer 2004. Call 3 for
the FP6 IST priority will be published in May 2004.
