ESRC Centre for Research on Innovation and Competition (CRIC), The
University of Manchester.
Applications are invited for the post of a Research Associate: Sustainable
Domestic Technologies: changing practice, technology and convention (Ref
231/04). It is 6 months tenable from July 2004 (or as soon as possible
thereafter). The job involves contribution to three distinct workpackages:
The first, "contextualising the present" involves an historical review of the
changing style, design, and purpose of British kitchens and bathrooms. Data
has already been collected from the Manchester Science and Technology
Museum, and content analysis conducted of publications of the Good
Housekeeping Institute. This will be followed by a more focused
investigation of the 'careers' of four appliances: freezers; washing machines;
power showers; and dishwashers. The product biographies of these
technologies will be traced by reviewing advertisements in appropriate
magazines and trade journals.
The second workpackage involves the collection of secondary data relating
to the diffusion of domestic technologies and changes to the UK housing
stock.
The third part, "anticipating the future", involves interviewing representatives
of key companies and organisations involved in developing kitchen and
bathroom technologies. Approximately 20 interviews will be conducted with
people responsible for the research, design, marketing and retailing of key
products; with representatives of trade associations representing bathroom
and kitchen designers; and with individuals responsible for energy and water
related policies and appliance standards.
The salary attached to the post will be in the range £18,265 - £21,125 per
annum (under review) according to relevant experience and qualifications.
