Thanks for that, Mark
Kind of knew it, kind of didnt
& still find it odd
the not really America thing is generalisable into something which isnt
particularly USAmerican
where I am currently, far west of Britain, we are - many will tell you - not
in England; but there are many here who would say that much of Cornwall is
not really Cornwall; because of anglo intrusion; and their line of
authenticity follows the line along the Hayle River south from the north
coast, making an _island_ (which it is if you count marshes as sea) to the
west of whatever 100-150 sq miles I suppose
30 miles further to Scilly and many there will deny they are Cornish, in
quite a different way - in my youth a sign saying boats to the off islands,
Cornwall, England and France
& I recall a Swedish novel - no title or author comes to me presently and
the book is 300 miles away - set in the north 19th century in which most of
the characters speak of "the Swedes" with some contempt... other examples
come to mind
I guess New York is different though because of its power and influence
ah well, ta for that, i shall save some soup to spill on the book when I get
it
back to my background ruminations upon USA
