Mairead,
Seems I can't post to BritPo from my new adress.
I tried to send the following in response to
Rupert's query but only received a 'return to
render' thingie. Would you could you forward this
to the list, please?
Best

Rupert,
A fair amount of Dieter's creative life was spent
in Iceland and he lived here throughout most of
the 1960s at least and into the 1970s. He had a
family here and his 3 children live here. I do
think his wife was Icelandic, hence the choice of
domicile, but not sure if he took up citizenship.
Many people still remember him; a printer friend
of mine now in his sixties used to work with him
on various projects and remembers him fondly.
Dieter did a lot of highly original book-covers
in addition to everything else up here and I
think I have 2 or 3 titles floating about my
bookcases. I seem to remember an interview with
one of his sons on tv a few years back who was
curating a collection of works somewhere outside
Reykjavik, even somewhere in eastern Iceland! I
could get a contact to him through his cousin,
who's a film-director that I've had the pleasure
of working with. I never met Dieter myself, but
up here his is a household name. While I was
studying at Exeter and felt homesick I used to go
into the University library which had several
interesting Dieter Roth items, including
something titled The Collected Works. This was a
velum bound Icelandic newspaper supplement on the
arts, cut to fit a bookcase in the way that only
the booksize centre of each page remained. I used
to read at random from this close-trimmed text in
order to drive my blues away and resist the idea
of going back home. There was a Dieter Roth
retrospect some years ago up here and there are
one or two very interesting essays in magazines
discussing his work here. I could check details
out if you like, but 'fraid you'll need to learn
Icelandic in order to glean anything from them.
Best
