‘recepción’/
‘reception’

Call for submissions
‘recepción’/ ‘reception’ is a new magazine that will focus on new and
innovative poetry, text art and performance writing in translation, both in
English and other languages. The aim of ‘reception’ is to highlight the work
of translation as a radical act of language exploration in its own right and
as a central feature of all negotiations of language, identity, difference
and writing. It will also try to challenge fixed ideas of what ‘english’
might be in the twenty-first century. With this aim it will concentrate
principally on publishing the work of young and unestablished poets and
artists working at the boundaries of the ‘contemporary’ in largely
exploratory language-oriented work. We are particularly interested in work
that considers polylinguistic writing practices, cultural hybridity or ideas
of ‘minor’ literatures and language communities.
Each issue of the magazine will focus on one country from which a single
group, tradition or strand of writing will be drawn to highlight the diverse
forms of contemporaneity in poetry, text art and performance writing
practised globally. The first issue will include work from a group of poets
from Chile working both in Santiago and in Europe. Other planned issues will
feature work from Italy, Sweden, Poland and Serbia and further linguistic
and writing communities will be covered in future editions.
We are also looking for challenging new work from young and innovative
English-language poets, text artists and performance writers for our
co-editors in other countries to translate into their languages and
traditions. Artists and poets whose work is selected for an issue will also
be expected to assist in the process of negotiating the translation of work
from the other language featured in that issue. In this way ‘reception’ will
explore ideas of trans-linguistic collaborative writing, shifting form,
media and genre, as well as language, both collectively and through
individual projects. Although the first issue will be in printed magazine
format only, we will hope to include a cd-rom with future issues and we are
developing a website for net-based writing. We will therefore accept work in
any format or medium, although print-based writing should not exceed five A4
sides.
The first issue of ‘recepción’/ ‘reception’ will be ready in autumn 2004.
Subscription rates will be announced in due course.
