Dear Mairead,
haven't done this before - have preferred to remain a bemused eye on the listserv - but now seems like a good time to extend my estate (to the extent of a mouth).
I greatly enjoyed your account of the Maine conference - if the fishing is good there as well (which it probably is) I'll move over.
You'll be missed at the Festival of Trevor this year - do consider coming to the greatly inflated version next year, during Cork's tenure of European Capital of Culture (note official use of capitals).
On the latter subject, I have a story (which I hope I didn't tell at last year's festival and which I'm bound to tell tonight):
When Cork's bid for the Capital of Culture was accepted a sign was placed at the beginning of Patrick Street (for those who don't know the city - the main street - for those who know it too well - 'Panna') saying as much. An early morning idler saw the sign and asked of a nearby window-washer: 'Is Cork the European Capital of Culture?' To which the reply came: 'European Capital? There's more culture in a yoghurt.'
Regards (exiting to general laughter),
Fergal (I met you this time last year in Trevor's house) Gaynor.
