But the pastoral version is true too. It's true more individually,
mentally, poetically, instantly, it's true in a different version of
society and time. The State and its constant failure doesn't actually
define us, not 100 percent, sometimes not 10 percent. We also get on with
our resources of living which are partly ancestral, and that's pastoral.
The individual inhabitation of biology and earth-space is pastoral.
The newspaper version and the fairy-tale version are both true.
And there's nothing wrong with a properly managed earth closet.
(The problem with Ireland is that it's had far too much money thrown at it,
which does no place any good. )
